For most Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs, the answer is Yes, but not now. The first step should be to click on the Windows icon at the bottom right near the clock and review the compatibility report. For users who have big problems with this report, then you can evaluate what it would take to upgrade your software. Depending on the updates required, you might determine Windows 10 is not a good fit. Also, if you are running Windows XP or Windows RT, then you cannot do the free upgrade. If your company is set in a domain, you will not have that little flag in the lower right- your IT administrator can get Windows 10, review software compatibility, and set it up for you.
Many users will have little or no problem with software compatibility so the next question is when to upgrade since the free offer is currently set to expire next July. Any time a new operating system comes up, there are invariably a number of bugs so expect at least one to two months before Microsoft has a chance to fix some of the more glaring issues. Unlike other upgrades in the past, if you do have a large unforeseen problem with Windows 10, you will be able to uninstall it within the first 30 days. If you want to get Windows 10, click on the link to reserve your copy and it will come automatically via windows update or your IT staff can install it on a specific day. Just don’t rush…already there is a report of a spam email encouraging users who don’t want to wait to click on the link and get Windows 10 immediately. Instead this malicious email will encrypt all of your files and hold them for ransom unless you have a good backup.
