PC -Tied Licenses

Some of us are getting used to working in the cloud, and some of us still need our premise-based software. Google Drive just isn’t the same as Office, right? Even Office 365, the cloud-based version of Microsoft Office, doesn’t feel right for some of us.

Well, those who love their Word or PowerPoint have a bitter new pill to swallow. Microsoft is now tying software licenses to the PC on which the
software was first installed. Buy a retail license for Office or a computer with a pre-installed version, and you’ll have to buy a new one for your next
PC. Maybe the object is to make sure that we update often, or maybe Microsoft is trying to make their subscription services look better by contrast, but it’s an extra cost for some offices.

Some vendors are completely doing away with software for sale that you can own.  Adobe has announced their next version of the Creative Suite (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc) will be only available by renting it online.  Many people who wrote in were not happy about that since you must pay for the software monthly and if you stop paying you have nothing.  That is hard to get used to since previously you could purchase a software package and use it for many years.  We’ll see how this goes…
